A flashy final for the derby

submitted article--It was great weekend of weather, participation, Shack food and good fishing in Â… Skidegate Inlet. Yes, Copper Bay had its share of anglers, however there didn't seem to be a good share of the Coho. Skidegate Inlet produced almost 100 percent of the weighed-in fish. All in all, a good derby with a record number of ticket holders (at least compared over the last 10 years) and a good number of Coho weighed in (149).The last weekend always has its share of drama and to a degree it lived up to the expectations. The drama was only in the junior category as the top two spots saw new names. The weekend winner was another category with some drama as the winner appeared to be weighed in and then 30 minutes later the last Coho of the day was in at 2 ounces more. Good sports all and Judy and Jasin had a good laugh. The top ten did create its share of tension as it looked at times as if a big Coho was being caught only to see it slip away. However the first place and leading lady were the first on the water and the last off. There was some discussion whether to stay until 8 pm when the scales officially close to see if anyone was going to challenge their positions. As it turned out there were no changes in the top ten or ladies standings (really unusual). So Billy and Mysti went home not really knowing if they were the ones with this year's 'Braggin'Rights'. Congratulations and you two really did put in the time in the boat for this derby.Final StandingsTop Ten1.Billy Yohanovich14# 04 oz2.Bill Rieger13# 03 oz3.Mysti Lutz11# 08 oz4.David Putterill11# 08 oz5.Jamie Matson11# 03 oz6.Tammy Matson11# 01 oz7.Clint Matson10# 14 oz8.Judy Foster10# 13 oz9.Carter Olson10# 12 oz10.Cam Leslie10# 11 ozTop Lady1.MystiLutz11# 08 oz2.Tammy Matson11# 01 ozJuniors1.Hannah Putterill10# 01 oz2.Justin Robinson09# 12 oz3.Greyson Gould09# 05 ozCheechako1.Kingston Ellis(6yrs)06# 00 ozWeekend Winner1.Jasin Wourms10# 05 oz57 fish weighed inThis derby is not possible without the support and help of the local business that donate to the prizes and of course all the volunteers that help in so many ways and truly make this feel like a community event. Ray K and Elaine do so much to make Copper Bay for the four weekends of the Derby, the social center, best hamburgers and sourdough pancake breakfast place on the Islands. A big thank you to all.Enjoy the off season, lick the wounds, savour the taste of the Shack food and prepare to challenge for the 2014 'Braggin' Rights'. The Dinner and Awards for this year's Derby is this Saturday (November 16).
