Forest fire near Port brought under control

A forest fire outside Port Clements burned almost four hectares of slash Monday afternoon before it was brought under control. The fire was in the Hoodoo-East Yakoun area on Western Forest Products' land and started when workers were burning slash piles, said Debbi Thwaites, Western Forest Products engineering forestry clerk. A strong northwest wind came up unexpectedly and spread the fire.A dozen WFP management staff were quickly on scene to fight the fire, Ms Thwaites said.Three VIH helicopters were called in to help put out the blaze. The helicopters carried water buckets and dumped many loads of water on the fire.By Tuesday morning (Sept. 18) the fire was contained, Ms Thwaites said, and all management personnel from WFP's Juskatla office were out in the bush mopping up the fire remnants.
