Gwaii Haanas may become world heritage site

Gwaii Haanas is one of 14 Canadian sites nominated to become UN World Heritage Sites.
Canada already has 13 heritage sites, including the island of SGang Gwaay with the village of Ninstints, which became a UN World Heritage site in 1981. Wilderness areas and places of cultural significance are eligible for the heritage designation.
World Heritage Site designation gives added protection to sensitive areas and attracts international tourists.
A federal panel will consider the 14 nominations and pare them down to 10 over the next six months before submitting the list to the UN next year.
