Islander named to Order of Canada

Miles Richardson, former president of the Council of the Haida Nation and longtime chair of the Gwaii Trust Society, has been appointed to the Order of Canada. Governor-General Michaelle Jean announced the appointment last week, along with those of 70 other prominent Canadians, including former Prime Minister Jean Chretien. Mr. Richardson was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada. There are three levels different levels of membership in the Order: companions, officers, and members. The award recognizes outstanding achievements and excellence in all sectors of society. The awards were announced just before Canada Day. The Governor General's office said recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
