Seventeen new rental homes will be coming to Daajing Giids, according to North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice.
The plans are in conjunction with the Daajing Giids Heritage Housing Society – which currently operates six housing facilities – with the building site at 609 Second Avenue in the west side of the village.
A March 22 announcement outlined plans for affordable housing projects in 15 communities across B.C.’s Interior and North through the province’s $3.3 billion Community Housing Fund, which says it will bring more than 20,000 affordable homes to B.C. by 2032.
“It’s exciting to be building more homes on Haida Gwaii,” Rice said.
“Every community in B.C. faces unique housing challenges that need to be addressed.
“The Daajing Giids Heritage Housing Society is a perfect example of an organization that understands their community’s goals and needs. Our government supports them in achieving these goals.”
Rent at 70 per cent of units at CHF-funded housing projects are charged by income – usually about 30 per cent of their income – according to the province, while the other 30 per cent of units are charged market or below market rents for households with “moderate incomes.”
A 28-home project was also announced in Vanderhoof, with the other 13 communities to receive funding in B.C.’s Interior.
