New internet service starts

The north end is getting a new internet service provider, says GwaiiTel administrator Paul Daniell.GwaiiTel has signed contracts with Lavoie Wireless, run by Jeffrey Lavoie, to serve Masset and Old Massett. The new company will fill the gap left by the abrupt departure of Sur Enterprises, a Sandspit-based internet service provider that is no longer providing wireless service, Mr. Daniell said."It's very good news indeed," he said. "There's a significant number of people using the service already. and quite a demand for growth."Meanwhile, GwaiiTel received a $250,000 grant earlier this year to expand internet service throughout the islands. The society is now working on identifying options and needs, Mr. Daniell said, and will be meeting with each of the communities to discuss.
