Boaters can once again use the public boat ramp in Masset Harbour at all tides.
Last week crews with the Village of Masset replaced some badly broken concrete at the base of the ramp with a set of grooved concrete panels.
“It was really broken up at the bottom,” said Sylvan Daugert, Masset’s superintendent of public works.
While the rest of the ramp was usable, if rough in places, Daugert said the broken base made the ramp unusable during some of the lower low tides of the year.
“We did get a lot of issues with the sporties, the lodges,” he said. “They have to work around their business hours rather than the tides.”
To install the panels, the crew had to wait for lower tides and good weather. They also ordered a floating silt curtain to prevent construction debris from getting into the water.
Daugert said the village is applying for more grant funding to replace the rest of the ramp. In the meantime, crews patched the most worn-out areas for a smoother fishing and tourist season.
