New affordable housing opens for Skidegate band members on Haida Gwaii

An ad hoc viewing of the 24 apartments took place in Skidegate during the weekend

On July 22, a two-storey on-reserve complex built by B.C. Housing in Skidegate opened its gates to the residents of Haida Gwaii.

Twenty-four homes were built through a partnership between the province through BC Housing, the federal government, Indigenous Services Canada, the Skidegate Band Council and the newly created Xaayda Naay Haida House Society, which will operate the building.

“There has been a shortage of housing all throughout the island. We have quite a housing demand in Skidegate...This will save them from looking at other communities for housing,” said William Yovanovich, band chief councillor.

These apartments, open to Elders and families, are at 848 Hwy 16 in Skidegate, conveniently adjacent to the Skidegate Wellness Centre, allowing residents easy access to cultural activities.

The homes include a mix of one-and two-bedroom units with a den. Yovanovich informed The Northern View they are currently discussing the criteria for tenant applications, and the rent will be established through an affordable income-based model.

The spaces in the building will showcase Haida artwork that pays tribute to both Raven and Eagle Clans, highlighting Haida culture. Alongside extensive community involvement, the Skidgate Band Council played a pivotal role in designing the building, focusing on traditional communal living principles.

Yovanovich, along with the Skidegate community, enjoyed an eventful week from Wednesday to Saturday during which they participated in a poker tournament, bingo, teen and adult dances, baseball tournaments and other kid’s events.

During this celebration, they took an opportunity to hold an ad hoc viewing of the new complex.

“Forty people turned up and had a quick peek at the apartments, some of the rooms were ready. There will also be a grand opening in a couple of weeks here,” said Yovanovich.

He said they are hoping to hear back on another housing grant application by early August which is also geared toward building more affordable homes in Skidegate.
