Plans to start a daycare at Tahayghen Elementary took a big step on Monday.
The Haida Gwaii School District will receive $265,000 from B.C.’s Ministry of Children and Family Development to create a licensed daycare at the elementary school — one with space for up to 20 children.
“These new spaces will provide families with quality care in licensed facilities,” said local MLA Jennifer Rice in a press release.
“And this is just the first step. Our government is moving as quickly as possible to create a universal and affordable child care program throughout the province.”
The funding can be used for whatever renovations, lease agreements, or equipment is needed to get the daycare started.
Schools Superintendent Dawna Day said the district is “very happy to be successful in our application for funding.”
The Masset daycare is still in early planning stages, Day said, and is not expected to open this school year.
For now, Day said the school district will be working closely with the province to move the project forward, as well as speaking with local parent councils.
Masset has been without a daycare since Little Doves closed early this year.
