A first-big storm, no outage

A fierce storm which hit the islands Thursday (Oct. 20) with hurricane force winds cancelled the Queen of Prince Rupert's run, but didn't knock out power anywhere except Sandspit.
About 50 Sandspit customers were affected by a blackout caused by the high winds, said BC Hydro spokesperson Dave Conway. Their power went out at 9:30 pm Thursday, and wasn't expected to be restored until noon Friday.
Other than that, power lines on the islands remained fully functioning, almost unheard of during a storm of this magnitude.
Mr. Conway said the lack of a major power failure was probably related to the tree-topping done along Highway 16 in August, a joint project of Hydro and road contractor O'Brien Road and Bridge.
"Although we can't confirm it, preventative vegetation management probably played a small role," he said.
