A Night of Haida culture this Friday

submitted article--On Friday (August 2), the Skidegate Repatriation and Cultural Committee (SRCC) will be hosting an Evening of Haida Culture at the Kay Centre, in partnership with the Haida Gwaii Museum, the Haida Heritage Centre, and the Skidegate Dance Group "Hltaaxuulang Guud Ad K'aajuu" (Friends Singing Together). To start the evening off, an informative presentation elaborating on the efforts of the Repatriation Committee and it's importance to Haida Nation will be given, and will include a question and answer period. Following the presentation, a locally prepared and catered traditional Haida seafood meal from the oceans of Haida Gwaii will be served. This will be set-up and served by voluntary members of the Haida Heritage Staff, the SRCC, and community. To close the night will be a traditional Haida Song and Dance performance by the Hltaaxuulang Guud Ad K'aajuu Dance Group. The proceeds will go towards current repatriation projects of the SRCC, including the initiative to bring the remains of eleven Haida ancestors back to Haida Gwaii. These remains are currently at New York's American Museum of Natural History, and the Repatriation Committee aims to have them back home by 2014. This fundraiser will contribute to the Haida Gwaii Museum Society's effort to establish and improve relations with other museum's around the globe. Bringing Haida culture back to Haida Gwaii is an important goal for both the Museum and the SRCC, and An Evening of Haida Culture serves as a strong contributor in their strive to achieve it.Ticket are available at the museum and the VIC in Charlotte. Sales close at 9 pm Wednesday July 31.
