Abandon oil-soaked environmental hypocrisy: MLA Coons

In the BC Legislature last week North Coast MLA Gary Coons demanded that the BC Liberal government say no to the Enbridge tar sands pipeline."This past weekend over 500 northern BC residents gathered in Kitamaat village to oppose Enbridge's plan to open BC's northern coast to tar sands supertankers. Twenty-eight First Nations are opposed to this proposal, including every First Nation on the north and central coast, as well as 80 percent of British Columbians," said Mr. Coons in the legislature. He asked the environment minister if he would put the brakes on the dirty oil development. The environment minister refused to answer, despite the overwhelming opposition to the project."The BC Liberals need to abandon their oil-soaked environmental hypocrisy," said Coons. "It's time for this government to choose one side or the other - either they want a clean environment and a living coast - or they want to play supertanker roulette. They can't have it both ways. They need to support a federal moratorium on offshore oil drilling and join the majority of British Columbians who are saying loud and clear 'no supertankers on northern waters!'"
