Accident cut phone service to islanders

A Telus crew worked into the night Saturday (Sept. 26) to restore telephone service on the islands after a motor vehicle accident in Skidegate severed a phone cable.Telus spokesperson Shawn Hall said the accident occurred around 3 pm Saturday. Telus technicians were onsite within minutes. Mr. Hall said they flew in equipment and cable and waited until BC Hydro had declared the area safe from electrical hazard before beginning repairs.Service was restored around 1 am Sunday. The accident affected about 1,700 customers all over Haida Gwaii, Mr, Hall said.RCMP Sgt. Rob Knapton said the accident involved a self-loading logging truck which was being operated with its boom up and it hit a line near the bulk fuel station. The accident also affected internet service.
