Art Route booklets out

Islands artists could be attracting a lot more attention this summer thanks to the release last week of thousands of brand new "Art Route Haida Gwaii" booklets throughout northern BC.Although islands artists have been organizing the "art route" promotion for a couple of years, this year's brochure was published and distributed by the Misty Isles Economic Development Society.MIEDS's involvement has led to a bigger brochure, wider distribution, and three summer day trips which will allow tourists to get on a bus and visit several artists and galleries, said the society's former managing director, Anneli Rosteski.Ms Rosteski, who is still working for the society from her new home in Victoria, said 15,000 brochures are being distributed all over the islands as well as on BC Ferries and at visitor information centres along the Yellowhead Highway from Prince George on west. The art route is a good example of the type of project MIEDS can develop which can help people in all communities on the islands, she said. Once the society got involved, it was able to get matching funding of $15,000 from BC Tourism, she said. The money is going towards a joint campaign with BC Ferries promoting Haida Gwaii, and an islands "pad map" as well as the art route.MIEDS is still working on the itinerary for the three day trips to art studios, Ms Rosteski said.
