Asbestos removal underway in Masset

A contractor is in the final stages of removing asbestos and other hazardous materials from the former military buildings in the middle of Masset, says mayor Andrew Merilees.Mr. Merilees said the job, which started in the spring, took a bit longer than expected as some additional material was discovered that had to be taken out.A couple of different contractors have worked on the hazardous material removal, he said. The buildings are owned by the Greater Massett Development Corp, a partnership between the villages of Masset and Old Massett.Mr. Merilees said it sounds like the asbestos removal will be complete by about the end of November. The GMDC will be ready to move onto the demolition stage once it receives a certificate stating that the asbestos has been completely removed. The GMDC board has previously agreed that the old hospital site and the barracks will be demolished, but postponed a decision on the old recreation centre, Mr. Merilees said, pending a review of its condition.
