After 15 years as the Cultural Liaison for Gwaii Haanas, Barb Wilson of Skidegate has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UVic for her commitment to life-long learning and professional achievements. “I was really quite overwhelmed by it all,” said Ms Wilson. “I had not received something like this before, and I didn’t really know what it was all about. I guess it was for my teaching and writing.”Ms Wilson has for several years worked and lectured with groups such as the Haida Watchmen and has co-published books on subjects covering topics such as Haida history and culture and natural phenomena on the islands. She’s also helped with the naming of places and streets, and is a specialist at Gwaii Haanas on all things Haida, old stories, traditional ecological knowledge and more.Through her writing and teaching of topics such as ethno-botany and cultural stewardship, she hopes to help Haida people find healing and regain their identities.
