BBQ kick starts healing circle

submitted article--On Friday (June 14), there will be a free BBQ lunch for women held at the Wellness House in the Transition House complex in Masset. The BBQ is a kick starter event for a women's healing circle which will begin in the fall. There's been a lot of success in Masset and Old Massett for support groups that focus on wellness and healing. What we would like to see next is a group for women only, not as a way to exclude men, but to recognize that healing and reconnecting to people and community after trauma happens differently for men and women.A women's healing circle can be a space for women to meet and connect with one another, to talk, to engage in activities, to learn about trauma and its effects, and to address family violence and sexual abuse in a variety of ways. One critical piece of the healing journey is reconnecting with community.Debra Courtoreille, Old Massett Village Council Social Development, Sandra Dan, Haida Health and Rachel Lavrisa, Stopping the Violence Program (HGSCP) are partnering to host this event. The BBQ is a way to connect with women, and to ask for input and ideas on what a women's healing circle could look like and to identify barriers that keep women from participating in support groups or from seeking professional help. The BBQ will run from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on Friday, and if you wish to bring a dessert to share it would be greatly appreciated! For questions or more information, please contact Rachel (626-6052) or Sandra (626-3911).
