Bear season closed

The black bear hunting season on Haida Gwaii is now closed, and won't be open again until next year. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Operations closed bear hunting season effective midnight on June 27 under new regulations that came into effect in April. The new regulations end the hunt after four bears have been killed."The season normally closes June 30, but it has to close 72 hours after the quota has been met," said spokesperson Cheekwan Ho of the Ministry of Forests. The regulations allow for a fall hunt, but only if the four bear quota has not been met. Because four bears have already been harvested, there will be no bear hunting season this fall. The spring season will open next April 1.
