Brazen break and enters in Masset

Masset police were called to two separate break and enters at the same fishing lodge in the same night. The caretaker awoke to the sound of voices and called the police at around 12:20 am on March 6, but by the time officers arrived, around a minute later, the perpetrators had fled.Constable Sam Perren of the Masset RCMP says a quantity of liquor was reported stolen and officers found fingerprints, which they were able to collect as evidence. The officers left the lodge at around 2 AM, leaving a card with the police file number and a sheet of paper with advice on how to clean up fingerprint dust behind. At around 6 am another call came in from the lodge. This time the caretaker was awoken by his alarm and heard bottles clinking. He got up, but the intruders had fled the scene again. When police arrived, they were told that several other things had been taken, including a pool cue, a yellow cedar carving of a bear and a basketball sized glass ball with an eagle image and a map of the islands etched into it.Also missing was a mahogany humidor filled with 20 cigars, more liquor and the RCMP card with the file number and the instructions about fingerprints."It was pretty brazen," Cst. Perren said.Police are recommending charges against four youth in connection with the crime, but they are also looking for others who may have been involved.Since the break in, police have recovered several items, including some beer and coolers, the pool cues and several poker sets, but are hoping the public can help them find the carving, the glass ball and the cigar box. "The big thing is to get these things back," he said.During those same early morning hours, police received several other calls about youth spraying fire extinguishers. Cst. Perren said there was damage caused to the interior of a school bus and to a building at the fuel dock. Anyone with information can call the RCMP at 250 626 3991 or Crimestoppers at 1 800 222 TIPS.
