A British group has named the Haida Heritage Centre in Skidegate as best new overseas tourism project. The British Guild of Travel Writers announced the award at their annual awards dinner in London on Nov. 8. Two hundred and seventy journalists, authors, editors and broadcasters voted the centre as best for not only tourism potential, but also benefit to the local community and the environment. Co-chair of the Haida Gwaii Tourism Advisory Committee Andrew Merilees says the centre is the Islands’ jewel and is a significant benefit for all tourism business on the islands. “It’s a fantastic and well deserved recognition of the excellent job the Heritage Centre has done promoting Haida culture and interpreting the natural history of the islands.”
