submitted by the QCI Hospital Day Committee--The Queen Charlotte Hospital Day Committee is pleased to announce this year's recipients of the Margie Colcol Bursary. The Margie Colcol Bursary honours the memory of a nurse who made a difference in the health care of our islands' community. The goal of the bursary is to provide educational funding for residents of the Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii to pursue ongoing education in a health care field with the hope that they will return to the islands to practice these acquired health care field skills.Three bursaries of $1,000 will go to each of the following individuals who are pursuing degrees in a post-secondary health care field:Grace Cole has completed a year of studies at UNBC and has now been accepted into the Northern Collaborative Bachelors in Science of Nursing in Prince George. This program is offered by the College of New Caledonia and the UNBC. Grace went to Port Clements and Tahayghen Elementary Schools and graduated from GM Dawson Secondary. When she receives her Bachelors Degree in Nursing she hopes to return to Haida Gwaii to work in a local hospital.Jaimie Holt is living in Victoria and has completed three years at Camosun College. She is starting her second year of her four year Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing degree. She is looking forward to returning to the islands or the north to practice nursing and sees that profession as a way to help individuals strive for for an optimal state of health by encouraging preventative measures to individual health.Terry Mitchell has completed his first year of a two year Medical Radiology Technology studies at the College of New Caledonia and will convocate in May. A resident of Haida Gwaii for 20 years, Terry has been employed in the forest industry and as a part-time BC Ambulance Paramedic. Terry and family live in Tlell.Congratulations from the Hospital Day Committee to these qualified and deserving individuals.
