Byelection in Port in September

Port Clements will be holding a by-election Sept. 9 to fill a vacant councillor position.
The election could have been held sooner, but council members didn't think the summer holiday season was a good time. They decided to hold it on the first Saturday after Labour Day, as recommended by chief administrative officer Terry McMullon.
The seat became vacant when councillor Derek Hoenen resigned June 9 because he was moving off-island.
Council will appoint a chief election officer sometime after June 21, in order to comply with the Community Charter and Local Government Election Act, which state that the election must be held no later than 80 days after the naming of the chief election officer.
