Canada Days in Port; the time is now!

  • Jun. 26, 2009 8:00 p.m.

It’s time for the annual Port Clements Canada Day celebration and the village has something going on for everyone. The fun starts Friday with the traditional children’s fishing derby at the big dock, followed by a brand new event – a fireside jam at the Sunset Park picnic gazebo. Saturday, the morning begins with pancake breakfast at the community park, and a parade through town at 10:30 (participants should marshall at 10). The day continues with slowpitch and soccer tournaments, children’s games, a family fun run, dirt bike races and $15 helicopter rides. Then, there’s a barbecue dinner at the Sunset Park and a dance at the old community hall. Sunday features more slowpitch and soccer, plus Port’s famous mudbog races. The action starts at 1 pm at the mud pit behind the community park (registration starts at 11 am). The Charlotte Island Off Road Club says the track will be muddier than ever this year! There will be three vehicles classes and an exhibition class for those who just want to do a fun run. It wraps up with the extremely entertaining “dash for cash” event, in which children run through the mud looking for a bag of cash. There will be three runs: 9 and under, 10-15, and 16 and up.Check out the complete Canada Days schedule in Islands this Week and the Canada Days insert in this Observer.
