Canada Post petition to be submitted to government next month

The petition signed by hundreds of islanders demanding better service from Canada Post is now in the hands of the Clerk of Petitions in Ottawa, says Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen. The clerk will comb through the petition, making sure that all the names on it are valid and that none are duplicated. Once Parliament reconvenes on March 3, Mr. Cullen said, he will submit the petition to the government."It's the biggest petition I've ever seen from the riding," he said.Meanwhile, Mr. Cullen said the Canada Post officials he has met with continue to be "belligerent" and don't seem interested in finding a way to improve mail delivery to Haida Gwaii. The Canada Post bureaucrats are possibly the only people in Canada who think that ferry service to and from the islands is dependable, he said. This winter's many weather delays and sailing cancellations have played havoc with the mail, generating even more complaints from islanders."I don't think even the head of BC Ferries thinks the service is reliable," he said.Mr. Cullen said another approach to fixing the mail service would be for Parliament to change the minimum delivery standards, which it has the power to do. Canada Post's minimum delivery times are terrible, he said, and are allowing the corporation to claim that it is technically meeting standards. However, changing the Canada Post legislation would be a lengthy process, and Mr. Cullen said there is a quick and easy solution: finding an airline to carry mail here."The fix for Haida Gwaii is much more simple, it's them coming up with alternate routes," he said. "Why they won't is a mystery to me.... You can tell I'm getting a bit frustrated, it defies logic."
