Candidates forum Tuesday

Islanders will have the chance Tuesday (April 21) to see the three local candidates in the May 12 provincial election talking about education and other topics. It's the first time in recent years that an all-candidates forum has been held on the islands before a provincial election, and the first time ever that the debate will focus on education issues. The event takes place at the Port Clements multi-purpose building. Gary Coons, the North Coast riding's incumbent MLA and the NDP candidate will be there, along with Liberal candidate Herb Pond and Green Party candidate Lisa Girbav. School district superintendent Angus Wilson will join the candidates on stage to share his ideas about education and to provide locally relevant information, said teachers' association president Evelyn von Almassy. After the debate, the public is welcome to stick around and chat informally with the candidates, Ms von Almassy said.Refreshments will be served. The forum starts at 7 pm, in the seniors room at the multi-purpose building.
