Changing Pro-D calendar will save money for school district

The school district has decided that all islands schools will hold their professional development days on the same dates next year, a move that will save around $10,000.The savings will come from busing costs, superintendent Angus Wilson explained at the April 27 school board meeting. Buses will not have to run at all on the days chosen for professional development, as students throughout the district will stay home.Trustees pointed out that this should be a positive move for some families as well. Teenagers will now be out of school on the same days as their younger siblings, meaning that some parents won't have to scramble for child care. The tentative professional development days for 2010-2011 are Sept. 27, Oct. 22, Nov. 1, Dec. 17, Feb. 11 and May 6, Mr. Wilson said.
