Charges to follow dramatic incident in Masset

A Massett man will be facing charges after he crashed his truck into the back of a parked police car in a dramatic incident early Saturday morning (Oct. 16) on Harrison Road between the hospital and Old Massett. The three police officers on the scene jumped out of the way as the truck approached, Sgt. Grant MacDonald said, but a man sitting inside the police car was injured in the collision, as was the driver of the truck. The crash occurred at 2:18 am, Sgt. MacDonald said. The three police officers were on Harrison Road because they had responded just 15 minutes earlier to a call for help involving a suicidal man. They had parked on the side of the road with the vehicle running and its right signal light on while assisting the man, who ended up sitting in the back seat of the vehicle.A few minutes after the first call for help, the detachment received a call reporting a possible impaired driver leaving a local licenced premise, including the direction he was going, a description of his truck, and his identity, Sgt. MacDonald said. Just after that, the three officers on Harrison saw the truck coming at them at a high rate of speed, he said. It then veered to the right and collided with the police car.Sgt. MacDonald arrived on the scene shortly after this, as did BC Ambulance Service and the Masset volunteer firefighters. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, he said, while the man who had been sitting in the back of the police car was treated by the ambulance service and released into the care of his parents.Sgt. MacDonald said the incident could easily have resulted in more severe injuries or death. Fortunately, none of the three police officers were physically injured. The police car sustained a lot of damage and Sgt. MacDonald will be sending it off-island and getting a replacement vehicle. In 12 years as an RCMP supervisor, he said, he has only seen one other incident that resulted in damage like this to a police car.
