Charlotte residents vote 'yes' to move water intake

Voters in Queen Charlotte have voted overwhelmingly in favour of authorizing the village to borrow up to $900,000 to locate the intake for the new water system above the old garbage dump.In the referendum held Saturday, 165 votes were cast, with 131 in favour, 32 against and 2 spolied. The tally is not official, provisional only, and the official figures will be released later by the chief electoral officer. The issue was hotly debated last fall, when many residents strongly opposed the original plan, which would have seen the intake below an old dump, which was active during the 1970s.Don Plumb and Rolf Bettner spearheaded a drive to get the village to reconsider, which resulted in the strong 'yes' vote Saturday.More in the Observer Thursday.
