Clapp Basin road closure delayed for now

The permanent closure of the Clapp Basin Road has been delayed while talks are carried out between the owner, the province and the Council of the Haida Nation.District manager Len Munt said the parties are trying to find a solution. "I hope by the end of the week to have some options," he said.April Churchill, vice-president of the Council of the Haida Nation, said the CHN is also participating in the effort to find solutions. "Hopefully we'll find something that will satisfy all parties," she said. She noted that the Haida have cultural and traditional sites in the area that they are interested in continuing to access. "People in Skidegate have traditionally and historically used the area for food fishing activities," she said. Although the owner is not proceeding with deactivating the road at this time, that does not mean that people are allowed to use the road."Government can't give permission for someone to use private property," said Mr. Munt.
