Community drug meeting to be held in Old Massett March 6

Anyone with questions about drugs, their impact on our communities, and the role of police will have a chance to ask the RCMP in Old Massett next week. Healthy Communities, the Village of Masset and the Old Massett village council are sponsoring an information session with the RCMP on March 6 at 7 pm at the Old Masset Village Hall. Leslie Bellis, board member of Healthy Communities, said the idea for the event came from the RCMP. “The RCMP approached us last fall to see if it was possible for us to organize a public meeting to answer any questions they have about the RCMP’s role in regards to drugs,” she explained. Ms Bellis said that sometimes there’s frustration in the community because the RCMP aren’t making arrests, or because people don’t feel that their tips are acted upon. Officers will be explaining exactly what information is required before they can make an arrest, she said, and the public can ask any other questions they have. A drug and alcohol counsellor will also be at the session to answer questions. Healthy Communities will consider holding another session in New Masset, said Ms Bellis, depending how many attend next week’s meeting.
