Company eyes Masset's wind

A Vancouver company is applying to use crown land south of Masset for a meteorological tower to study wind speeds in the area.Broadwing Renewables Inc. submitted the request last month for an investigative use permit. If the permit is approved, the company plans to build an 80 metre tower at the site, collect data for 12 months, and see if it would be possible for a wind farm to supply power to the north end of Haida Gwaii.Masset council discussed the application briefly at its June 28 meeting, but council members voted to table a decision on whether to recommend approval to July 12. Administrator Trevor Jarvis will be checking with Transport Canada to see if the proposed meteorological tower would interfere in any way with the Masset airport.
