Crime victims week next week

Acknowledging that victims of crime come from all races and backgrounds is the goal of National Victims of Crime Awareness Week. The local Islands Women Society is holding many events during the week of April 10 to 16, to recognize victims and those who work on their behalf. One of the highlights comes mid-week, says IWS outreach coordinator Nadine Jones. A barbeque to appreciate service providers will be held in the RCMP parking lot in Queen Charlotte on Wednesday April 13 from 11 am to 2 pm. RCMP officers will man the barbeques serving up burgers for all. Ms Jones says the celebration is focused on health care workers, mental health team members, emergency services and social service people, but all members of the public are welcome. As well, Ms Jones will show several movies on April 12 at the Heritage Centre in Skidegate. The films share stories of men speaking out against violence against women, of women in jail for murdering their abusers and more. She says they contain mature subject matter and may not be suitable for all.On Thursday, April 14, another movie, Dissolve, will be shown at Queen B's. The creator of the film Meghan Gardiner will be at the event and can answer questions, but the actual content of the movie is a mystery. "If you want to findout what dissolve means come out," she says. A community potluck rounds out the week on Friday at the Skidegate community hall from 4 to 8 pm. Ms Gardiner will perform a short play based on her film at the event. The events are made possible with an $8,000 grant through the Department of Justice Canada Victims Fund.
