Deer, plane tangle at Masset airport

The Masset Airport Committee is looking at ways to improve airport fencing after a TK Air flight from Prince Rupert collided with a deer after landing.
Masset's chief administrative officer, Trevor Jarvis, said the incident happened about a month ago, on TK Air's regularly scheduled evening flight.
"They touched down, then clipped it with a propeller," Mr. Jarvis said. "My understanding is the passengers on the plane didn't even know what happened."
There was no damage to the plane, he said, but the deer had to be killed because it was severely injured.
There is a fence around the airport, but the northern edge is bounded by the ocean. The area where the fence meets the beach has always been difficult to maintain, Mr. Jarvis said, and he believes this is probably where the deer slipped in and ended up on the runway.
The airport committee is looking at a couple of different solutions to improve the fence in the beach area, he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jarvis said, this is the first and last incident of its kind at the Masset airport.
"It's pretty unique, and I don't intend to have it happen again," he said.
