submitted by Emmy O'Gorman--A pod of Risso's dolphin was spotted from the barge headed for Sandspit Dec.1. These large mammals are mostly found offshore, though they were spotted repeatedly on the west coast of the islands and in Gwaii Haanas this summer. It's believed the Risso dolphin feeds mainly on large squid, but its diet does include fish. They are quite large, up to 12.5 feet and 1,100 lbs, with a rounded head and dark grey body covered in white scarring. Keep your eyes peeled for these unusual visitors!
