A large earthquake centered off the northwest coast of the Charlottes shook islanders from Old Massett to Sandspit Saturday afternoon.
The quake occurred at one minute after 4 pm, according to the Geological Survey of Canada, which gave it a preliminary magnitude of 6.1.
Ron Tranter of Old Massett said itÃs the biggest earthquake heÃs ever felt.
ìI thought it was the big one,î he said. ìMy wife collects salt and pepper shakers, and some of them went flying.î
In Sandspit, Sherry Price was in a friendÃs joey shack when the quake hit.
ìI said, ëDo you have the washing machine going?à and she said ënoÃ,î Ms Price said. ìI said ëWeÃre having an earthquake thenÃ. It was a good one.î
