Emergency helipad access concerns management committee

Members of the Queen Charlotte Management Committee are concerned with sports fishermen blocking access to the community’s helicopter landing pad, but decided when they met August 3 that they could do nothing about the problem.
The helipad, between Queen Charlotte and Skidegate Landing, is used for emergency medical evacuations, but is beside the ramp where many residents launch their boats, then park their vehicles and trailers, sometimes in front of the helipad access gate.
Committee member Eric Ross told the committee the sign that’s there now is unclear, saying ‘Danger’ and “Keep area clear” without specifying which area.
“There is nothing mentioned anywhere around that yard that it is an ambulance (zone),” he said.
“The signage isn’t ours to do yet,” director Carol Kulesha told the committee, noting that the pad belongs to the regional district until the community incorporates December 7. “Then we should put up a sign,” she said.
