Enbridge coming soon to Port Clements

Representatives of Enbridge Inc. will be in Port Clements this Tuesday or next to explain the company's plan to build a pipeline from Alberta to Kitimat, allowing supertankers to ship tar sands oil to markets in China and the far east. The village council invited Enbridge to make a presentation after listening several weeks ago to the local Enbridge Awareness Group. The group has asked every local government on the islands to make a resolution opposing the Enbridge pipeline. So far, every community except Port has done so, mainly due to concerns about the possibility of an accident drenching the shores of Haida Gwaii or the north coast in oil. But Port council members said they wanted to hear both sides of the issue before making a decision. The Enbridge meeting will be held in the council chambers in the multipurpose building starting at 7:30 pm, but as we went to press the date of the meeting had not been confirmed. Village administrator Heather Nelson-Smith said it will be held either May 11 or May 18, with the 11th being the most likely. We will post the date on this website qciobserver.com as soon as we know. You can also call the village office at 557-4295.
