Enbridge meeting still likely in June

There is still no word on what day Enbridge officials will be in Port Clements, says village administrator Heather Nelson-Smith, but the company has told her that they remain committed to coming to the islands to explain the Northern Gateway pipeline project. The proposed Alberta-Kitimat pipeline would allow companies to sell tar sands oil to new markets in China and the Far East. The oil would be shipped out of Kitimat in supertankers that will cross Hecate Strait and pass by Haida Gwaii on their way to the Pacific Ocean.Port Clements council invited Enbridge to speak about the project after hearing a presentation from the Enbridge Awareness Group, which is asking local governments on the islands to pass resolutions opposing the pipeline.Ms Nelson-Smith said the latest information she received from Enbridge is that the Port visit will likely be in mid to late June.
