Council of the Haida Nation president Guujaaw has written to Enbridge, the company planning an oil pipeline across the northwest to Kitimat, inviting him to come to Haida Gwaii. “Rather than send a few people to help you ‘design’ such a project, we invite you to come here to our people and explain to us the need for such a project and why we should risk.our life ways and our culture for the sake of this project,” Guujaaw wrote. Earlier, Enbridge president John Carruthers had invited CHN members to join a meeting in Kitimat in June. “Thank you very much, but we aren’t interested in helping you desing a project(when) the more important question of whether or not (it) should even be allowed, is not answered,” Guujaaw said. The CHN president also said the Enbridge project would involve tankers using the waters of Haida Gwaii, and the Haida “will certainly be involved in any process that would consider the acceptability of such a project.”
