Entangled young whale elusive

A report of a young grey whale tangled in line was looked into by officials last week, but they found nothing. The Gwaii Haanas office in Skidegate received the report second hand last week, that a grey whale calf, 10 to 12 feet long, had been seen entangled in line and floats in Deer Cove, near Cumshewa Head. Two Parks employees went down to look it, but were unable to find it."That's fairly common with entangled animals, given it's grey whale migrating season, I suspect it was very mobile," said Lisa Spaven, DFO's Marine Mammal Response Coordinator. She's hopeful there'll be further reports of the whale over the next few weeks, and she plans to let officials in Alaska know it may be heading there.Gray whales spend the winter in Mexico and pass by Haida Gwaii around this time of year on their way to the Bering Sea.To report any marine mammal needing assistance, call 1 800 456-4336.
