The black bear hunt is underway on Haida Gwaii, despite assertions that it would not continue this fall.In May Haida Nation president Guujaaw told the Observer "there won't be a fall hunt because our people wouldn't allow it." But outfitter/licence-owner Kevin Olmstead of the Tlell River House said things are going ahead as usual. "Nothing's changed," he said by telephone from another one of his properties in Northeastern BC.Mr. Olmstead wouldn't say how many clients will be taking part in the hunt on the islands, which is open between Sept. 1 and Nov. 30, but did note that spring is his company's big season here."We're hunting every place else in the fall," he said.Blockades and protests were staged last spring at the top of the road leading to the Tlell River House. Citizens from all over the islands participated, with one man even dressing in a bear costume and greeting passersby. The Observer contacted Guujaaw for his comments, but was not able to speak with him before deadline.
