Federal budget has no focus: Nathan Cullen

Submitted by Nathan CullenLast week's federal budget fails the Northwest and people across Canada, Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen said from Ottawa Friday."It's a scattergun budget with no coherent focus. The rich get richer while economically hard-hit communities will continue to fall further behind from this $34 billion deficit gamble," Mr. Cullen said. The MP said constituents told him clearly during his 10-community tour on the economy that they want their federal tax dollars to help those in the greatest need, fix Employment Insurance, kick-start the green economy, and jumpstart infrastructure projects."This budget hands over $60 in corporate tax cuts for every dollar spent on unemployed workers," Mr. Cullen said. "Worse, not one single additional unemployed worker was made eligible for Employment Insurance. There's nothing for wind energy or solar power, and the budget completely fails to relieve small, cash-strapped communities from coming up with 1/3 of the funding for infrastructure projects", Mr. Cullen said.He acknowledged the budget will pass despite his party's opposition as the Liberals will support the government's misguided financial blueprint."It's unbelievable the Liberals would support a budget that fails their own test to protect the vulnerable, safeguard today's jobs and create the jobs of tomorrow," he said. The MP vowed to fight for every penny the region is promised in the budget and to seek additional funding for struggling communities.
