Ferries getting busier

The ferries that serve Haida Gwaii are getting busier. The latest statistics from BC Ferries show that, while traffic has declined slightly across the whole system so far this year, the number of passengers travelling on the Northern Adventure and the Kwuna was higher this June when compared to June 2012.The biggest increase was in the number of vehicles taking the Kwuna between Skidegate and Alliford Bay, which was up almost 13 percent. A total of 4,324 vehicles made the 20-minute crossing in June 2013, compared to 3,835 the year before.The number of passengers travelling on the Kwuna also increased, although not by as much. The little ferry carried 9,117 passengers this past June, compared to 8,757 the year before, an increase of 4 percent.Out on Hecate Strait, the number of passengers taking the Northern Adventure between Prince Rupert and Skidegate was up 9 percent. In June 2013, a total of 3,811 passengers made the crossing, compared to 3,491 in June 2012.The number of vehicles on the Northern Adventure rose by almost 8 percent, with 1,427 vehicles travelling on the Northern Adventure this past June compared to 1,327 a year ago.
