Open fires are banned until further notice in the Haida Gwaii and North Coast Fire districts.The ban is effective as of noon on July 30 and covers Category 1, 2 and 3 fires, which means no one should set materials piled more than one metre by one metre alight. This does not include campfires.Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site has also released a fire ban. The remoteness of Gwaii Haanas and the reality of whether there would be enough fire fighting resources given all the other fires in the province, necessitated the ban, says Terrie Dionne, manager of external relations for Gwaii Haanas in a news release.She notes that those who are traveling without white gas stoves may use small fires for cooking, as long as they are below the high tide line.A wildfire burning in the Kispiox Valley in the northwest had grown to an estimated 75 hectares by July 28. Forty-five firefighters were on site trying to contain the blaze.
