Five local RCMP officers to Olympics

Five RCMP members from the islands will be in Vancouver for the next month or so, working on security for the 2010 Winter Olympics. In Queen Charlotte, Sgt. Rob Knapton said two members of his detachment left last week for the Olympics, leaving five members on the islands.Sgt. Knapton said the remaining members are not allowed to take holidays or go away for training during this time, so staff levels should remain the same as normal."It really hasn't impacted us at all," he said. The nine-member Masset detachment has lost three members to Olympic security detail, said Sgt. Grant MacDonald, leaving six members on duty here. The RCMP is restricting leaves between Jan. 15 and March 30 to ensure that all communities are covered while Canada provides the security required by an international sporting event like the Olympics, Sgt. MacDonald explained.
