Submitted by the Fernandez-Earle Scholarship Foundation-The Fernandez-Earle Scholarship Foundation is launching a new major scholarship for a graduating high school student from the Queen Charlotte Islands to attend Simon Fraser University starting in the fall of 2010.The Fernandez-Earle Scholarship Foundation (http://www.fernandezearle.com) has been providing university scholarships to worthy Queen Charlotte Island (Haida Gwaii) students since 2001. This exciting new opportunity is a four-year scholarship valued at $15,000 annually and is intended to cover all costs related to tuition, books, meals and residence."We've been helping students from the Queen Charlottes afford university for nearly a decade, but being able to bring a student to attend Simon Fraser University is a major development for the Fernandez-Earle Scholarship Foundation," says Beverley Knifffen, president of the foundation. "Partnering with one of BC's top universities allows us to enhance our mission of strengthening coastal communities through education."Working closely with high schools in Hada Gwaii, the foundation will choose a worthy recipient for this full scholarship to recommend to Simon Fraser University each spring. The successful candidate will receive confirmation from Simon Fraser in August after the university has received the student's final grades.Honouring the memories of Kane Fernandez and Roger Earle, two successful businessmen who were committed to education and were frequent visitors to the Charlottes, the Fernandez-Earle Scholarship Foundation's goal is to help strengthen coastal communities by ensuring their future leaders have greater opportunities to realize their educational goals.
