Northern Health urges at-risk residents to get free flu shot
Every year, around 1,400 people in BC die from influenza and pneumonia (a serious complication of influenza). Influenza-related illness and death is largely preventable through a safe and easy-to-get vaccine that is being offered through public health nurses at local community clinics.
"Influenza can be a serious health threat, especially for individuals in at-risk categories, such as the elderly," says Dr. Lorna Medd, Chief Medical Health Officer. "A vaccine is readily available and getting it protects your well-being, and could even save a life."
The flu vaccine is free for those in at-risk categories, which include:
? People 65 years of age and older,
? Residents of long-term care facilities
? People with chronic diseases
? Health care workers
? First responders such as police officers, fire-fighters, and ambulance crews
