Golf tournament a great success

The Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournament was a fundraiser for Literacy Haida Gwaii, and had 46 golfers competing over June 1 and 2, playing nine holes in Masset on Saturday, and then another nine holes in Sandspit the next day. "I'm definitely happy with the turnout, being the first one," said organizer Beng Favreau, Literacy Haida Gwaii's executive director. Ms Favreau estimates that the event raised $17,000 for the island's literacy outreach program. Some of the celebrities even teamed up with islanders to join in the competition, said Ms Favreau. Celebrities attending the event were CBC personality Shelagh Rogers, Double Exposure comedy duo Bob Robertson and Linda Cullen, musician Mike Stevens, and poet Susan Musgrave. Unfortunately, Hydaburg basketball player Damen Bell-Holter, who was scheduled to attend, was called away to try out for the NBA.The evening activities also went well, said Ms Favreau. The Old Massett dinner on Saturday night had 78 people attending and the dinner in Skidegate on Sunday had 94. Literacy awards were presented on those nights, Pansy White winning one in Old Massett and Mavis Mark in Skidegate. Burt Crosby was also presented with the PGI award in Skidegate. Ms Favreau said all the literacy awards winners were given standing ovations. There were four trophies given out for the golfing tournament as well. Individual trophies were won by Steve Malesku - Overall Low Gross, Steve Samuels -Overall Low Net and Fran Fowler - Women's Overall Low Gross. The team trophy was won by The Dixon Entrance Squad - James Sawyer, Craig Russ, Chris Russ and Charlie Thompson.
