Grow and Gather on Haida Gwaii

Submitted Article--Everybody's talking about peak oil. What will the future look like as imported food becomes more and more expensive with the rising cost of oil? Everybody needs to eat. Some of us love to eat. Some of us even like to grow and/or gather our own food to eat. Do you know all the hidden possibilities of what lives and grows here and tastes good too? Come out and celebrate local harvest on Haida Gwaii at the first ever Grow and Gather event at the Haida Heritage Centre Saturday, June 12. Festivities start at 1pm and include: food demos and tastings, recipe sharing, vendor booths, displays and story-telling for children. There will be a potato planting demonstration in one of the garden beds showcasing the Haida potato. Check out the fascinating variety of fresh, preserved and dried foods and be amazed at someone else's creativity in food preparation! At 4 pm the food fest begins. Dishes will be on offer buffet style, each featuring at least one ingredient that can be grown and one that can be gathered on Haida Gwaii. Bring your own plates and fill them up with delectable goodies for $5. Contact Rydé Harding at 559-7885 ext 234 or Stephanie Fung adventurebraids@gmail.com if you would like to set up a table to sell or display your locally grown or gathered foods, submit a recipe for the recipe exchange, do a live demo of your recipe or prepare your recipe for the food fest. Prizes and honoraria will be awarded to participants. Let's get together and share some good food. This initiative was made possible through the BC Healthy Living Alliance and local partners - Islands Food, Literacy Haida Gwaii, QCI Rec and the Haida Heritage Centre. Donations appreciated.
