Haida artists swept this year’s 2012 YVR Art Foundation Scholarship awards, with young Haida women winning three out of six prizes. Ariane Medley, Raven LeBlanc Pearson and Cori Savard were all recognized for their artistic accomplishments at a ceremony last week in the Vancouver airport. Each has been awarded $5,000 plus the opportunity to have their work displayed at the airport for one year. Marlene Liddle, the proud mother of Cori Savard, tells us that Ms Medley is currently apprenticed with Isabel Rorick to learn spruce root weaving, Ms Pearson is apprenticing with Ben Davidson in Skidegate to create a painting, and Ms Savard is apprenticing with Reg Davidson, to create a carved panel. The other YVR winners this year are Nathan Wilson, Haisla; Cody Lecoy, Okanagan; and Danielle Morsette, Sto:lo.
